Aside from when you’re bathing, changing outfits, or strutting around naked (hey, you do you!), your skin is in contact with clothing or linens for almost an entire 24-hour period. That’s nearly constant exposure to fabric and whatever is in or on that fabric.
Do you know what’s in or on your clothing and linens?
If you’re getting them from the local big box store, your laundry detergents, stain removers, and fabric softeners may smell nice (your first red flag!), but what’s really inside may surprise you.
These laundry detergents and aids are made with a variety of chemicals, many of which are considered toxins due to their potential health and environmental effects. Certain product manufacturers use greenwashing terms like “eco-friendly,” “natural,” and “unscented” on product labels to dupe customers into believing their products are safe. That’s why it’s important to know which ingredients to avoid and to read your product labels carefully.
There are harmful chemicals commonly found on laundry detergent labels, some not even clearly defined, that are concerning for human health and the environment. Beware of any products containing these 10 toxic agents:
- Alcohol ethoxylates: Can cause allergic reactions and respiratory issues.
- Dyes: Associated with asthma, cancer, and vision damage, among other health risks.
- Formaldehyde: A carcinogen that’s harmful to ecosystems and fabric.

- Methanol: Associated with asthma, cancer, and vision damage, among other health risks.
- Methylisothiazolinone: Associated with skin irritation, allergies, respiratory problems. Inhaling can lead to damage to DNA, cancer, organ failure, skin irritation, vision impairment, and more.
