think organic equals non-toxic? think again!

the real meaning of organic beauty and what you’re not being told

We’ve all been there, perusing the aisles of our favorite beauty product store and letting ourselves get pulled in by the word “organic.” That word means that product is safe, right? Means that you don’t have to worry about toxins and allergens and who-knows-what-else? Means you can feel good about making a smart choice, seeking out the best option for you and your family — even the planet? Means someone somewhere is looking out for you and making sure manufacturers are doing the right thing when making that product? Right?

Wrong!

This one’s a hard one to swallow, but the term “organic” doesn’t mean any of those things.

So sorry to break it to you, but the beauty industry is built on lies, and using the term “organic” on a product label can be one of them. Add it to your growing list of greenwashing terms to watch out for when shopping.

Here’s the truth about “organic” products:

  1. Organic doesn’t equal non toxic. Many plants, whether grown organically or not, contain substances that can be toxic or allergenic.
  2. A product label touting “made with organic (fill in the blank)” is just that: a product made with some organic ingredients. The USDA requires that manufacturers use this wording only on labels for products containing at least 70% organically produced ingredients.
  3. When you see “organic” on the front of a product, it means that product contains a minimum of 95% organic ingredients (excluding salt and water). When this requirement is met, the USDA allows the product label to include the USDA organic seal and/or organic claim.
  4. Only products containing 100% organic ingredients (excluding salt and water) can be labeled as “100% organic.”
  5. No manufacturer can use an organic claim or the USDA organic seal on their product without first having their facility USDA certified.
  6. Although the USDA provides these labeling rules, they do not oversee beauty/cosmetics industry labeling and packaging at all.

Given these shocking truths, it’s clear that the best way to find truly safe, non toxic products is 1) to shop with a trusted USDA certified manufacturer and 2) shop with a manufacturer that uses only safe, effective, non toxic ingredients (that includes organic ingredients).
