All over social media, people divulge their multi-step beauty routines, often inspiring others to follow suit. One of the latest beauty routine trends is called the “Morning Shed,” which stacks skin care products at night in hopes of waking up gorgeous, thus shaving time off their morning routines.
Not a bad idea, right? Who wouldn’t want to wake up, “shed” those beauty products, and look amazing enough to walk out the door?
But like so many TikTok trends, this one has its drawbacks. One of those drawbacks — a pretty enormous one! — is the promotion of toxic beauty products.
What we don’t like:
- toxic ingredients: There is a slew of ingredients to avoid in your skin care and hair care products due to short- and long-term health risks. Unfortunately, many manufacturers include these toxins in their products anyway because they provide a cheaper way to accomplish certain results, including prolonging shelf life, and often keep consumers coming back for more.
- sheet masks: One problem with sheet masks is that they are soaked in questionable ingredients. Applying them to your skin at all is risky, but leaving them on overnight can be even more dangerous. Many of these types of masks contain concentrated (and potentially toxic) ingredients that are only meant to be applied to skin for a short time. They can also trap oils, bacteria, and other pore-clogging agents on your skin all night, so that you wake with blemishes. (Not exactly the glow most of us are looking for.)
- mouth tape: This special type of tape is meant to help mouth breathers close their mouths and breathe through their noses while they sleep. Although there are benefits to breathing through your nose instead of your mouth, using mouth tape can cause issues for people who have sleep apnea or other respiratory issues, including a simple cold or seasonal allergies, those who have consumed alcohol, and anyone with even slightly sensitive skin, which may become irritated by the tape’s adhesive agent.
What we do like about this trend:
A relaxing nighttime routine to help you sleep well and wake up with glowing skin.
While a regular bedtime routine is good and healthy, it’s important that it consists of relaxing activities to help you wind-down from your day and top-quality products made with safe, effective ingredients that won’t set you up for next-day blemishes or future health concerns.
Our ideal nighttime routine includes:
- time to unwind: Turn off the television and any other screens (no phones, tablets, or laptops!), listen to soothing music, and diffuse calming essential oils to help you relax and prepare your body to rest. Those with tired, achy feet might also enjoy a soothing foot therapy soak followed by ultra-hydrating foot therapy cream.
- a simple skin care routine: At minimum, you’ll want to stick with the basics of cleansing, toning, applying eye cream, and moisturizing. The pre+probiotic ingredients in Pure Haven’s refresh skin care collection work to feed and protect your skin, promoting a healthy skin barrier and defending against the effects of aging, pollution, and everyday stressors. Too boost your nighttime complexion recovery, we suggest applying night serum before your moisturizer to help rebalance and rejuvenate your skin and overnight firming cream after your moisturizer for added hydration and to help improve elasticity and firmness.
- dry, chapped lip care: Use sugar lip scrub to slough away dead skin cells and smooth rough patches. Follow with overnight lip mask to repair and re-hydrate the skin on your lips while you sleep.
- added calm: Just before bed, apply sleepy body oil to arms, legs, and torso. Formulated with organic seed oils and essential oils, this product helps moisturize skin, relieve anxiety, and calm the spirit. You can also apply to feet to help boost immunity.
- an easy, non toxic “morning shed”: This nighttime routine is easily “shed” in the morning with a simple daytime skin care routine that includes the basics of cleansing, toning, applying eye cream, and moisturizing. Before moisturizer, we suggest applying beauty booster to help with fine lines and wrinkles followed by hyaluronic acid to maximize hydration and visibly “plump” skin.
In summary, when you go to sleep, your skin goes into a regenerative mode, relaxing from the onslaught of environmental stressors it’s fought off throughout the day and taking time to repair. Don’t disrupt your complexion’s downtime with harsh, toxic ingredients that keep your skin fighting throughout the night.
