meet the 12 sunscreen ingredients under FDA scrutiny

There’s no doubt that wearing sunscreen to protect yourself from the dangers of sun exposure outweighs the risk of not wearing it. There’s also no doubt that certain sunscreens are safer than others, so it’s important to read labels and choose wisely.

The Federal government hasn’t updated sunscreen regulations since 2011. However, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is expected to publish a review of 12 potentially dangerous sunscreen ingredients in the fall and stricter standards are expected. The FDA is due to issue new rules on sunscreen ingredients, formulations, and labeling by no later than September 27, 2021.

The chemical sunscreen ingredients under scrutiny are:

  • Cinoxate
  • Dioxybenzone
  • Ensulizole
  • Homosalate
  • Meradimate
  • Octinoxate
  • Octisalate
  • Octocrylene
  • Padimate O
  • Sulisobenzone
  • Oxybenzone
  • Avobenzone

Studies have shown that six of these sunscreen ingredients can enter the bloodstream after just one application and can linger for days or even weeks. These six ingredients are homosalate, octinoxate, octisalate, octocrylene, oxybenzone, and avobenzone. Oxybenzone seems to be the most concerning of these ingredients, as it is absorbed through skin in large amounts and has been found in breast milk, amniotic fluid, urine, and blood and is a known endocrine disruptor.

Hawaii already bans the sale of sunscreen products containing oxybenzone and octinoxate in a measure to preserve the island’s marine ecosystems, particularly the coral reefs, which are in danger of bleaching, deformations, and die-off from these chemicals. It is the first state to do so, but other vacation destinations, including Key West, Florida, have also taken measures to ban sunscreens containing those harmful ingredients.

Safer alternatives are available.

Your best option for sunscreen remains mineral sunscreen containing zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, ingredients that safely protect your skin from the sun by providing a physical barrier that helps reflect the sun’s rays. The FDA has deemed zinc oxide and titanium dioxide safe and effective. A mix of zinc and titanium dioxide provides broad-spectrum protection.

Non nano zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the active ingredients in pure haven sunscreen. This lightweight formula protects from both UVA and UVB rays and includes aloe vera and green tea extract to help hydrate and care for skin.

Pure haven also offers a lightweight, easy-to-apply face sunscreen lotion made with zinc oxide.
