Don’t Get PEGged: Why You Want to Avoid PEGs in Hair and Skin Products

peggedsquare_012017

PEG is the abbreviation for polyethylene glycol, a mixture of compounds bonded together. Polyethylene is the most common form of plastic, and when combined with glycol, it becomes a thick and sticky liquid.

Found in many hair and skin products, PEGs are petroleum-based compounds that function as emollients to help soften and lubricate skin, and as emulsifiers to help water-based and oil-based ingredients mix properly. However, impurities such as ethylene oxide, a known human carcinogen that also may interfere with human development, and 1,4-dioxane, a carcinogen known to affect liver and kidneys, have been found in various PEG compounds.

Although 1,4-dioxane can be removed from cosmetics during the manufacturing process, there is no easy way for consumers to know whether products containing PEGs have been through this process. In a study of personal care products marketed as “natural” or “organic” (none certified under the USDA National Organic Program), U.S. researchers found 1,4-dioxane as a contaminant in 46 of 100 products analyzed.

The contaminant 1,4-dioxane is also a leading groundwater contaminant. It doesn’t easily degrade, so it can remain in the environment long after it is rinsed down the shower drain.
